My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Based on personal experience, not special training

I am a graduate of Tennessee Temple University, with experience tutoring at Tennessee Temple University, as well as University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, in various topics, including biodiversity, mathematics (up to pre-calculus), history, and American Sign Language. I continue to study in my personal time as many topics as possible, with the belief that a good tutor is firstly a good student.
I allow my teaching style to mold itself to each individual student, finding methods of communicating the information that best suit the learning style of my student. I favor a holistic approach to learning, believing that education should be of the whole person. If a student learns how a skill in his tutoring session can be applied in real life, then his or her perception of the subject may fundamentally improve.

I truly enjoy working with children and realize each child has a unique way of learning. Tutoring allows this one-on-one contact to discover how each child learns best. My teaching style focuses on improving a child’s memory and understanding of subjects. I like to alternate subject examples with practice to develop the student’s problem-solving strategies. I also help the student connect abstract concepts with things they can relate to in their own life. I use a lot of positive reinforcement and encouragement. To promote long term understanding I ask the student questions to encourage the student’s explanation to foster a deeper understanding of concepts.

As a college senior, I have accumulated countless hours towards tutoring and mentoring those in need. Whether it's Pre-K, Elementary, Junior High, High School and College students, I spend a great part of my life not just accomplishing goals, but taking the time to extend a hand and bringing those once behind me to the forefront. I have grown to learn that the right amount of disciplne and nurturing go further than a full dose of either. The subjects I mostly excel in are mathematics, psychology, English, reading, and the Arts. I feel that the well-rounded education that I have received makes me versatile in the educational system as a multi-threat to the decline in graduation rates.
I find great joy in watching a child progress in their education. All children are capable of learning at their own pace, and through repetition. Your child will find success and ease in their academic ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Hands on! I taught (and LOVED) K through 3rd grade self-contained EMH students (ranging from autistic to learning disabled, all speech-language impaired). I was trained in and have used the Great Leaps Reading Program, and have an entire library of resources and supplemental material to help teach special learners (particularly in the area of reading development). I enjoy the elementary level, and LOVE the energy involved in teaching that population. I am very hands on and use a variety of teaching styles to reach all learners, and believe learning should be FUN!
After graduating college, I worked at a local children's shelter as the Director of Outreach and Prevention. Through this position I was allowed to work with at-risk children in the Marion County School System (through an interagency agreement). My teaching style is a type of facilitator approach. I realize the with every classroom there is middle level of learners the same as lower and higher achievers. My goal becomes aimed at the middle with reserves and encouragement for the lower as well as higher students.I often try ro challenge the classroom wholly and getting to know my students individually. This is key. My goal should be shared by my student instead of mowed over by it. Together we learn not individually.
I began teaching in 1998. My previous job was taken away by forces of nature. I had taken advantage of the Military Troops to Teachers Program with no clear pathway to practice. Until I found myself with a possibility of unemployment. I I applied at a correctional facility and I was hired over the next week. Hence my introduction to the classroom and the world of academia. Over the next five years I was for ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

There are several perspectives to my teaching style-the viewpoint from me, from the student, from the administrator, and from the parent. I am confident about my teaching style. I genuinely believe that all individuals are capable of learning something, whether it is academic or an appropriate behavior. I view myself as low-key, persistent, and encouraging. I've heard students describe me as "someone who can make sense out of the book stuff". Based on results from evaluations, I know that administrators are pleased with my performance. Parents are satisfied when their child has attained knowledge, and like that I am willing to teach their child according to his/her strength and learning style.
