A Little Bit About Me...

I began playing piano at the age of 5. At 13 I started teaching piano in Hawaii Kai at the request of neighbors and the business has continued all these years. One of my former students is a police office now, one is a prosecuting attorney, one sailed on the Hokulea. I have great pride in feeling that my small role as a teacher helped steer them towards a successful career. We all know that music instruction helps students do better at school. Some of the most sought after surgeons in Hawaii are classically trained concert pianists. Students don't need to invest in a piano, a keyboard from Costco does just fine. Learning is Always New

I've taught creative writing to Japanese university students in English only (songs, stories and poetry) for two years, and ESL to all ages in Japanese society for 22 years. In America, I taught freshman public speaking, composition, and literature at the university level. My students have gone on to top-level universities, and placed first in prefectural level speech competitions.

Poetry is one of my top subjects!

Learning needs to be enjoyable. When students enjoy what they are learning, that means that they are engaged in what they are learning. When students are engaged, they can better grasp the concepts being taught. I make sure to get to know my student's interests so that I can relate what they are learning to situations that happen in their own lives.
I have an Associates in Arts and Teaching degree from Leeward Community College on O'ahu. While completing my associates degree, I was a leader for an after school program for the Leeward YMCA where I worked with students in grades K-5. I have two masters degrees. I have taught music. My employment involves being the IT manager for an automobile dealership. I have dealt with just about every type of PC Problem, hardware, software, e-mail, website security, etc. I also do the bookkeeping for the enterprise. I have my own income tax service. Also, I fix PCs. As far as the creative side, I attend a writers group in which we do creative writing. I have been to over 10 colleges and pretty much understand pedagogy. Pedagogy is how they teach and how you learn. The more advanced the courses you take the less they help or guide you. You're on your own. They hand you a syllabus, and say go figure it out. Expereinced SAT / ACT/ GRE tutor with perfect scores

My tutoring experience has mainly focused on SAT / ACT prep and ESL (TOEFL). I have also been a high school / middle school teacher in social studies / history / humanities for the past 4 years. The best successes come after their greatest disappointments

I have experience with pre k to 8th grade tutoring in Math and English tutoring to help students prepare for Iolani and Punahou entrance exams through Dr. Takahashi Juku. I have also worked extensively with children from Japan who struggle with English. I can explain English words and grammar in Japanese and well as read and write Japanese .

I love working with children and adults!

I am an informal teacher because I do not yet have the experience teaching in a formal setting accept for writing lesson plans for language arts. Otherwise, I am looking forward to working with adults and children on their studies because they need the help.
