I am a recent graduate of Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania (May 2011). I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in creative writing. I also have a minor in photography. During my time at Mercyhurst College, I worked as a writing tutor in the school’s writing center. When students entered the center, it was my job to immediately make them feel comfortable by greeting them with a friendly smile and asking what I could help them with. After this, the students’ explained their assignment and expressed any concerns they had or anything their professors wanted them to work on. I then proceeded to read their paper and used my knowledge and experience to work with them to help revise and edit the essay. I believe that grammar and punctuation are critical in written expression. I am very focused on the learning style of the student and will begin with most student making that determination and connection with the student. I also work well with students who are dyslexic, have ADD/ADHD, and who are left-handed. I attempt to build a relationship with the student so that are willing to listen, learn, and work to master their assignment and/or skill. Meeting students where they are academically and not "where they are supposed to be." Allow the student to lead the way and discover the answers and pathways to knowledge and skill. At our first session, I ask that each student complete a short quiz to determine their learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc). Every child learns differently and I believe that discovering what works best for each student is the first step towards success. Once we figure out what his/her learning style is, I cater to this. If they learn best by reading, I'll prepare worksheets based on what they're learning; if they're hands-on learners, I'll make an activity.
