Drawing is one of my top subjects! I have a Masters of Art Education from The Ohio State University. I have taught Elementary visual arts for over 33 years, I am proficient and able to teach painting, drawing, print making, relief sculpture, weaving, and other fine arts children would enjoy. I also would incorporate art history and introduce artists who are relevant to the concept being taught.

The arts teach children to make judgments about their environment without a right or wrong answer, and that there are many ways to look and solve a problems. Art is a way for children to express themselves without words in the literal form or numbers as only measured on standardized tests. Meaning the limit of our language does not limit a child’s cognition. I believe the arts teach children to observe and solve problems from many perspectives. Art enables us to have experiences that no other source does. It should be relaxing, hands on, enjoyable, and also a learning experience. I would allow the student to help decide what he or she is interested in working on and learning about in the arts and take our journey from there.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with students. It is important that teachers see that children learn differently and really accommodate each child as an individual. I began by building a relationship with each child, so I know how they learn and what are all the interests. From there, I facilitate the teaching, by really letting the child learn his best way. I strongly believe in hands on learning, where the students are part of the learning process. The children learn best when they feel they have a voice in it.

I believe a supportive environment is critical for an excellent learning experience. First, I work to set up an environment of mutual respect, a place where the student knows I respect him or her and the student respects me. To accomplish this task, I actively engage with the student by showing an interest in the student's life. Essentially, I get to know the student. I then aim to clarify the subject matter the student finds challenging. If they still find a concept confusing, I approach the topic in an alternate manner. I try to devote the day to getting kids interested in learning while covering the topics necessary. I cater to each child's needs and abilities and try to use their strength's to help their weaknesses. For example when teaching foreign language, if a child is not as strong in language as they are in math, I try to use formulas to portray language in a more concrete manner. I enjoy working with children of all ages and find that they enjoy working with me due to the enthusiasm I show them.

I am a doctoral candidate finishing up my third year in the Department of French and Italian at The Ohio State University. My major is French, with a specialization in second language acquisition (SLA), and secondary specializations in modern French culture and French cinema. In addition to my studies, I also teach French within the Department. I can teach many different styles to suit different learning styles. I truly believe in the mastery technique. My 9 year old has ADD and severe dyslexia so i have to employ many different styles to meet her needs. Being a great teacher is all about knowing and understanding your student and how they learn.
