A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently pursuing a degree in secondary education with a specialization in American History. I have a passion for the subject and for helping students succeed. I just completed my practicum last fall and was active in a 10th grade World History class for about 10 hours a week. During the summer of 2011 I was employed at girl scout camp in Lake George where I planned and taught History lessons for our weekly programs. I also have worked for the Walt Disney Company, in the Magic Kingdom. While I was there, I was able to do American History trivia and tours for the Liberty Square area.
I really enjoy engaging the student in discussion of the topic and helping them experience the events in History rather than just remembering dates and locations.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy the challenge of working with children. My eldest daughter is a graduate of the University of Georgia and I have two teenagers currently in Middle and high school. They have augmented my ability to be patient and flexible when assisting with their homework. Further, their diverse curriculum has made it necessary to brush up on their current subjects as well as my teaching skills. Both are top students and both have won good citizenship awards. I love to help a student work their way through any difficulty they are having in any of the major subjects. It is always a challenge to direct the students learning and not do the work for them. But it is a good challenge! While I was a supervisor in the ACE based Christian school, I helped many of the students in the school to understand the areas, especially of math and science, where they had difficulty. Most recently I had the challenge of tutoring my wife, who is working on her Bachelors in Healthcare Management, through Business Math and Business Algebra. I graduated high school in 2000 with a local diploma and then went on to college at Utica School of Commerce. I graduated in 2002 with an Associated Degree as an Administrative Specialist. I have worked at a few different jobs and just went back to college again at Utica School of Commerce and got my certificate degree as a Medical Office Assistant.

All children are students; they can learn. The question is how best do they learn? I have used many differing styles from rote memorization through self-paced self-education. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (there really isn't any mystery) of Math, regardless of the level, in the real world. To that aid, I try to present real world problems at levels the student can understand. For lower level students, I investigate with them the development of the linear equations involved in setting up a relationship between two factors. A higher level student would solve multiple linear equations. A height vs. time linear relationship then can become quadratic, thus involving sports as an application.
