I love to teach!

I have 8 year of professional experience in public practice, corporate accounting, and consulting. I have done everything from external and compliance audits to advisory and tax engagements. I have worked with a wide variety of clients operating in numerous different industries throughout the US, Canada, and overseas.
I am a firm believer in relating education to the real world. This philosophy transcends into my teaching style. I make it a mission to ensure my students understand what they're learning rather than simply memorizing it to pass a test. I want my students to not only learn the subject matter but develop a fundamental understanding of what it takes to succeed in school, college, and the real world. As a recent grad, there are so many lessons I have learned throughout my academic and early professional career that I wished someone had taught me. I will do my best to ... read more

Old Soldier who likes teaching English

I told my students there was no "wrong" way to present class material. They were told they would be videotaped & critiqued by their class members..BUT their presentation would be on their military specialty (eg. a Motor Pool SGT would do a class on vehicle maintenance)..thereby increasing the "comfort level" of the presenter & enhancing the knowledge of the class. The students would be taught to affirm each other & give each other positive "feed-back".
I taught for 9 yrs at the 1159 US Army Reserve Forces School. I helped soldiers get promoted to SSG, SFC, & MSG by providing them with skills in writing correspondence, public speaking, lesson planning & class preparation for delivery in both a classroom & tactical (field) environment. I also provided remedial training for soldiers needing additional work in writing, lesson planning & class presentation.

American Sign Language and English Tutor

I have always had a passion for learning. Part of my passion includes helping others learn, grow, and succeed. As an undergraduate student, I volunteered as a Peer Mentor in order to help new students become accustomed to their classes. I also worked as a Peer Mentor for students who were struggling with their grades. Peer Mentors are carefully selected by Rochester Institute of Technology through a detailed application process. I volunteered as an English tutor, as well as a proofreader of essays, research papers, and projects. I have had the opportunity to work at a daycare for several years with children ranging from 6 weeks of age to 12 years. I have loved being able to help these children grow, learn, and succeed in their education. As a tutor, my specialties are American Sign Language and English. My comments on tutoring Reading : As someone who enjoys reading as a hobby, I am dedicated to sharing those literary worlds with my students and peers.

I am someone who understands that not all children learn effectively the same way. I am someone who will sit down with my student and ask them questions regarding how they learn and how they do not learn. Sometimes a student will not know how they learn effectively but they will know what does not work for them. From there I try to tailor a program to suit that student. As a tutor you are able to have that one on one time and you can design your instructions for a specific student therefore making your teaching more effective.
While pursuing a double degree from the University at Buffalo and working part-time, I worked in peer tutoring groups for Latin and writing. I have experience proof reading papers and correcting grammar. My four semesters of college Latin have given me a understanding of English language origins and modern usages. Latin also helps me to use punctuation and gr ... read more

Your Child Needs Help? I Am the One Who Can Help Them!!!

I am a direct/explicit instructional teacher or instructor. Explicit instruction is broken up into stages that follow a sequence. The sequence of teaching/learning is as follows: first setting a purpose for learning, then telling students what to do, then showing them how to do it, and finally guiding them with hands-on application of the new item that was learned. Reading Comprehension & Fluency Strategies: Fluency- 1. Focus on phonemic and alphabetic awareness 2. Teaching the meaning of learning simple to complex words 3. Give strategies to increase the speed of students reading aloud Comprehension- I focus on the five close reading strategies that support Common Core learning. 1. Number the paragraphs that you will be reading 2. Chunk the text 3. Underline and circle with a purpose 4. Write in the margin what each paragraph is saying 5. Experience in the study of British and American Literature, also have made a study of History in America and Britain as well during undergraduate coursework. During my Master's I studied British Literature and was a teaching assistant. During that time I spent two years teaching composition and argumentation at Bowling Green State University to cover college level essay writing which required both classroom and individual tutoring outside of class. Subjects for that course included a wide array of topics with a focus more on structure and the strength of the student's argument than the content or theme of the paper. I can handle any topic of essay writing as a result and will be able to bring out the core structural and grammatical needs for the paper.
