A Little Bit About Me...

I would very much like to enter the teaching world so that I might share the knowledge that I have acquired over the years. I feel I would be an excellent tutor as I would be very patient and understanding of the challenges for young students. I definitely believe we can and should be teachers for the next generation. I would strive to share my enthusiasm for math and science.
As the manager and head chemist of a solid fuels testing laboratory I have many years of experience training both high school and college interns. When tutoring I usually ask prompting questions to assist the person in working through a problem. By building off of the skills the student already has it helps them better understand the process. If a student is learning new material or does not understand the way something was explained I will try to come up with an alternative method. I will go through an example with them step by step ensuring that they understand what happens along the way. A Little Bit About Me...

I am three semesters away from completing two degrees, BS Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as well as BS Chemistry, at the University of Minnesota Duluth. I have a solid background in mathematics as well as biology and chemistry. I tutored math, pre-algebra through first semester calculus, at Lake Superior College from the beginning of fall semester 2008 to the end of spring semester 2009.

I tend to teach things in a visual way. Drawing pictures, diagrams and using visual aides are the best ways I have witnessed to teach kids. I also think a structured reward system is HUGE in motivating kids to succeed. You need to find out what motivates your kid (money, toys, etc) and set up a system where he/she can earn these rewards through academic success.
I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism. Under the six years of my tutoring, both of these "disabled" kids were completely mainstreamed and even taking some AP and challenge classes. I earned my bachelor degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth in Teaching Secondary Mathematics and Secondary Earth and Space Science in 2001. I just start where the questions are and help guide them to where they can find the answers. There is no better feeling than the feeling you get when a student has that light bulb go off and they finally catch on to a concept. I have an excellent background in all subjects and I have also worked in the construction industry. Therefore I am able to explain where this knowledge will be of value to the student in the future.
I have taught in the public school systems for 40+ years. I retired when I hit the rule of 90, but found that I missed the kids. I then substitute taught in grades k - 12 for another 8 years to keep in contact with my profession.
