My comments on tutoring French : I studied French for two years at the University and although I never lived in a French-speaking country, have acquired a great deal of experience in language. I am competent at teaching at beginner to intermediate levels. Of course grammar is important, but the main goal can be to help students understand and be understood. In addition, learning a language should be fun!
Although grammar is important, languages are acquired overwhelmingly by listening (60%) and speaking (30%), whereas only 5% each by reading and writing. I view myself more as a coach than a "teacher", using a modern didactic method also known as accelerated learning. Learning should be fun, otherwise, something is not right, and I always try to find out what that "something" is.
In the past 30 years, languages have been my passion. I have worked as a teacher, proofreader/editor, and also as a translator. I have taught everything from classes to private lessons, children to senior citizens with success and enthusiasm. I always try to find out what my students love, and start working from this to help them achieve their goals.
