I began tutoring as a volunteer in High School. I have since graduated Magna Cum Laude in less then 4 years earning two bachelor degrees in Political Science and Philosophy. I have recently finished my first year of law school in the top 30% of the class. My experience in Political Science, Philosophy, and law have set me apart in grammar, punctuation, and both formal and creative writing. I have most recently privately tutored a high school student in English, Literature, and Writing. I realize that each student learns differently and thus should be approached differently. My teaching style is to exert patience and positive reinforcement for each style of learning. I believe that tutoring is the missing link in a child's education, and that providing structure and follow up is the best method.

Math has always been an achievement of mine. I went to school and started out for an engineering degree, completing all the math including hard calculus. When I got to the university level I thought a business degree would be better as it is used in all types of businesses. So on top of taking hard calc, I took business calc, accounting, finance, and economics classes which all focus on math. I have no real teaching style as I have never really taught anyone. I have always helped friends out while we were in school together and I would just have to figure out at what level of knowledge they were having a hard time understanding and start to help them understand what was going on from that point on.

Having homeschooled my children (eldest is attending a top 20 public university)and volunteering extensively in the school community, I have become familiar with a wide variety of learning styles. My legal background has prepared me for tutoring in that I am able to effectively communicate with the student and present the material in a manner conducive to a learning experience(similar to explaining legalese to a lay person). Above all, I strive to ensure that the student has a true understanding of the materials, as opposed to simple memorization. I strongly encourage the student to take an analytical approach to learning, and to view both sides of any issue so that true understaning of the subject matter is achieved. I started tutoring classmates in seventh grade and tutored friends in college in Trigonometry. I have earned two BS degrees in Landscape Architecture and Computer Science with a minor in Math. this diverse education allows me to tutor in Math and Science as well as design and art. I have tutored part-time since 2004, mostly in high school Math, but have also assisted in Chemistry, CBEST, SAT, and GRE prep. I have also developed coursework and taught at UCSC in the classroom setting, and trained employees. My first visit is just an assessment of where the student began to get lost regardless of the age or level. More often that not, they have to memorize their fractions to decimal to percentage conversion from 1/2 to 1/12. Given this underlying knowledge allows me to focus on the subject at hand.
