Today is a great day to learn something new!

I foster development of the whole student by encouraging critical thinking. My methods are adjusted to meet the students needs with an individualized approach. My goal is to promote self learning and help students develop necessary critical thinking skills.
I am a full-time high school teacher with over 12 years of experience in education. I specialize in Science, but have experience teaching and tutoring most levels and subjects. Throughout my 12 years in public education I have developed many skills to accommodate various student needs. I have a love for learning and inspiring my students to be life-long learners by making content meaningful. When I taught sailing to young kids, I used to dress up like a pirate. I have lots of energy. I know I'm doing my job right when kids start laughing. When I taught to teenagers, I kept in mind my own experiences at that age. If I'm helping a student study hard on that big, important test that might have the ability to crush the student's soul - I bust out my acoustic guitar and sing about how It's The End of The World As We Know It (And This Test Means Very Little In The Long Run).

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 2005 I went on to work as a Special Education aid at the middle school level. I was responsible for a ten year old girl with Asperger's Syndrome, which required me to monitor her throughout the day as well as modify each lesson given in each subject. As math was her weakest subject, I was able to develop a a learning system which suite her learning style. I also taught her not only math but every other subject such as science, social studies, grammar, and reading. Throughout college I also worked as an elementary level tutor for those students with low reading levels

During my years attending UMass Dartmouth, I recieved my Bachelor's Degree in Sociology with a minor in Business Administration. But I also gained alot of experience working with children. I tutored elementary age students in the star program and college students at my campus job in the Unity House. I also was the coordinator for the New Bedford Speech Academy. This program taught students fron 4-6th grade public speaking skills. I have applied the skills I learned to my current job as a home tutor. For the last eight (8) years I have been tutoring ages kindergarten- third grade. I took courses in psychology and children. I have a J.D. Degree, Masters Degree and Bachelor of Arts Degree. I feel children are very self-aware and are very vulnerable to positive and negative feedback. Therefore, no matter how little progress is made, praise them. If no progerss is made or if an issue needs to re-addressed, praise them..."That was great, but let's try it this way!" I feel that you are positive, smiling, and they believe that you believe in them, 9 out of 10 kids will follow you!
I was more of an instructor than a teacher. I was a day camp counselor at Solway House parent/child resort in Saugerties N.Y. I instructed kids how to swim, dive, play various sports and gave dancing lessons to the guests. As a high school student I tutored 7th and 8th graders in an after school community center. I was one of a few staff at the University of Connecticut to instruct graduates and staff in the use of the various electronic facilites available to them.
