I worked as a teacher's assistant for several years in public schools in Illinois, assisting in K-5 classrooms. I worked at Sylvan Learning Center for 2 years, teaching beginning reading and elementary reading. As I gained experience, I began tutoring students in the school district where I worked. After several years, I became a fifth grade teacher in a private school where I taught for 5 years. After receiving the Ph.D. from Notre Dame in 1985, I taught at Saint Mary’s College, Purdue University North Central, and Notre Dame, and currently am teaching selected courses – just one each term – for Trine University.
