My educational philosophy includes the belief that all students are able to learn, but they must be active participants in their own learning--they must be engaged. From my time as a reading tutor to struggling readers in middle school, I understand the importance of first assessing a student's abilities in basic literacy (phonemic awareness, letter sounds and blending, concepts of print, recall & comprehension, etc.). I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Physical Science from California State University, Fresno. I received my first teaching experience as a substitute teacher. I next worked as a long-term substitute teacher for a year. I was then offered a full-time, permanent teaching position as a fourth grade elementary school teacher. This position lasted three years. I will never forget the joy I received each time one of my students learned something that they had been struggling with for some time. I have a BA in Anthropology which means that I have experience working with diverse groups of people and have a certain understanding and appreciation of the differences among individuals. I have many years of experience tutoring adults and K-12 students. Some of my students have included those with mental disorders and physical handicaps.
