I have been tutoring non-stop since I was an undergraduate student myself, and even had the opportunity to TA at St. Lawrence University. I have since used my translation skills in business, taught two years of advanced Spanish language courses at the University of Virginia, and two years of all levels of Spanish at St. Anne's-Belfield School. I love teaching full-time, but nothing compares to the one-on-one interaction and first row seat to the "aha!" moments that I enjoy as a tutor. As a tutor, I review previous test, quizzes and work with the student to see where the "disconnect" lies. Most students are very capable, they just need someone to explain the material in a way they understand. Some students are visiual learners, other kinetic learners or they learn by doing. My teaching styles vary depending on the student. I had one student who was an adult, moving to Ecuador for 2 years to work. I taught him the basics using methods such as flash cards, workbooks, and homework assignments. We met 3x a week for 3 months. In college I taught a Spanish course for a Christian Highschool near my university. This was rather different since the students were in their early teens. My method with them was 'FUN.' I used pop culture and things that interested them to help them learn. For example: I had them bring in a picture of their favorite celebrity and they had to describe the colors, clothing, and characteristics of that celebrity in Spanish. It was a success.
