A Little Bit About Me...

I love to work with students one-on-one from topic selection to final editing. Making the right decisions early in the writing process is critical to the paper’s success, and I have many classroom-tested tools and techniques to help students make the right decisions. My goal is leave each student with the skills they need to succeed in writing –not just a particular paper but any writing assignment they may face.
After earning my BA and PhD in English, I spent many years in industry as an engineer, quality manager, project manager, and technical writer. I have taught a wide range of subjects in college classrooms, from astronomy to information literacy and composition to professional writing. I am currently on the faculty at two colleges here in Maine and I serve as an editor for several academic and industry publications.

I have always been interested in teaching others, in particular, teaching children with special needs. The majority of my experience teaching is teaching children with special needs including many children with autism. The degrees I have earned in Psychology and Special Education have allowed me to gain an understanding in many areas, including social sciences, education, science, social studies, etc. I also have learned many grammatical skills due to writing research papers and various reports and essays in various areas of study. I am a very patient listener and think that I empathize well with everyone. While student teaching I learned to pay attention to all of the students in a very diverse student body. I chose texts from a variety of backgrounds- the multicultural approach was both ideal and necessary in that setting. I then emphasized the similarities between the texts and the need for standardization in language use. One method which succeeded was my attempt to improve the students' vocabularies by breaking words into their most basic components; they learned to define words which they might not otherwise have recognized. As in the study of math, the key to studying language is to simplify.
