I enjoy working with children and always have. I feel my teaching style is more in the Socratic method in that I like to ask them questions until they come to the answer themselves because I feel that increases the retention rate of the subject. Additionally, I like to take the concepts that are being taught and give them real world applications and examples to make the learning more relevant. Throughout high school and college I volunteered at a local summer theater workshop for children. In this program I started out as a teen counselor and moved on to be an adult helper and play director. Also, I worked for a summer as a camp counselor for the Freeport Youth Summer Program where I led children in games and some educational programming. In college I acted as an informal tutor and study buddy to classmates.

With my undergraduate degree in hand I taught Marketing and Sales at Whiteside Area Vocational Center in Sterling, IL, for eight years. I left teaching to enter the corporate world working for several companies, i.e., National Manufacturing Company in Sterling, Amerock Corporation in Rockford, and Greenlee-Textron in Rockford. I moved from a product manager to national account manager. Following my corporate experience I returned to tutoring students, K-12, in Princeton, IL, in math up through geometry, and specializing in tutoring students who could not go to school either due to an accident or illness. I am best in a one-on-one environment and can acclimate to most personalities. I love learning and care very much about passing that on. First, I would get to know the client personally (parents, siblings, friends and interests). Next, I would work with the client to identify the problem areas and create a list ranking them from major to minor. With each session, we would work through the list only advancing when the client was comfortable with the subject matter. I love using different styles of teaching to see which way each individual learns best. I believe all students are capable of learning the same curriculum, but may need to be shown or approached in different ways. I started tutoring people because it seemed like a great way to meet different people, but I continued because I like helping people learn and discover new things. Everyone is different and therefore my teaching style various by student but typically the way I relate the information to everyday events or make abstract ideas concrete are the most effective.
