A Little Bit About Me...

I don't just want to regurgitate information to a student; I want them to learn. I allow them to try to complete and assignment, and if they ask questions, I think of the child's learning style. How they learn affects how I explain it to them or how I show them. If they are having trouble understanding, i will model their question and answer it correctly. In relation to the tutoring position, I have a year of experience in tutoring grammar school students in math and reading. As a graduate student at Mississppi State University, I was a teacher assistant for 2 years in Introduction to World Geography. These are the only two jobs I have had that are related to job that I am applying for.
Personally, I enjoy everything about education. I believe that if you can educate a person, then doors are opened for them. I am the type of tutor that gives basic instructions, then I allow the student to try a few things on their own. If they struggle, then I will step in and help them. At college I worked as a tutor for two years in the areas of chemistry and mathematics. I earned BA's in chemistry and biochemistry and have some laboratory experience. Having been educated at a liberal arts school has also given me the opportunity to study philosophy and sociology. I also write well, as writing is emphasized in all disciplines of study at Knox. Previous to my college education, I was also active in my tutoring program in high school.
The most important part of teaching is to teach students the principle or concept behind a subject. I do not believe in making students memorize absurdly large lists of facts in order to pass a test. Learning should be more fundamental than that. When a student has been successfully taught something, the student should be able to solve an array of problems with a common theme.
