A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching. There is something about the educational process, transfer of knowledge to students, that I have always found satisfying. It has been my experience that learning is an active process rather than a passive one. Thus I have seldom “taught” students anything. Rather I have enabled the students to learn. My teaching and curriculum development experience provides me with an understanding of the needs of community colleges students. I therefore have tailored my teaching techniques to ensure the success of those students. By and large my teaching evaluations over the years show that students have appreciated my ability to explain difficult concepts and the interest I take in the progress of the students.

A Little Bit About Me...

After spending 20 years in school, I have learned how to study for just about anything. My undergraduate experience was weighted equally between the science classes necessary for entry into veterinary school, and my passion for the written word, which I pursued through the Oregon State University Honor's college. Veterinary school reinforced my knowledge in all the life sciences, in addition to honing my study skills.
As a tutor, my goal will be to improve understanding of and appreciation for the subject matter, in addition to providing tools for effective self-study. I believe strongly in personal accountability, and will strive to give my students a feeling of empowerment with regard to their studies. Students interested in counseling regarding preparation for a professional school would also be welcome.

My teaching philosophy is to combine clear objectives and relevant content with a playful approach that encourages interest, exploration and successful learning. For focused tutoring or one-on-one help, I like to use and work through examples. I also like to ask general questions and questions *almost* like those that are assigned. For example: Where do you think this type of chemistry is important? Considering this problem in your book, what happens to the system if this quantity if doubled? The intent is to go beyond rote memorization and try to get students engaged.
In graduate school, my teaching work included leading discussion and lab sections in organic and general chemistry.
