I am a trained and experienced Orton Gillingham tutor. I have been tutoring 1:1 since 2002 in the Massachusetts and Nashua, NH area. I like to discover what my students already know about the topic and to expose any misconceptions. Brainstorming activities work well for me. I like to help define the topic in common terms, not the classic dictionary method. I use presentation, discussion, videos and hands on activities. Most of what I do is inquiry based. I have a passion for teaching but waited until I gained some "real world" experience. As an early childhood teacher, I have had several opportunities to help children (school age), to do homework. I also was a tutor in high school to a boy for just Algebra, which then turned around to being all of his subjects and helping him keep on track. The hardest thing for me was that he had only lived in the U.S. for four years, and had trouble speaking English. After each session of tutoring, I would grab the Scrabble board, which encouraged him to use more words, learn new words, and have fun while doing so. I like to get to the point of certain problems, such as reading the child/student when I see them, ask them some questions about the subjects they need help in and why they need help. I believe the best way for someone to learn something is through application and repetition. As both a tutor and youth lacrosse coach I have had success by teaching my students how to approach problems rather than simply giving them answers. I believe all children want to learn. Sometimes it takes some work to find the spark that ignites the learning process. Unfortunately, a larger classroom may not be the best environment to find that spark in some kids. I've been successful with both children and adults because I have a knack for finding out what motivates them. Once I know something about how a student thinks, I can better come up with concepts that will help her or him understand the subject. I've been teaching since I was an 18-year-old Navy Hospital Corpsman in the 1970's. How do I summarize teaching in my life? I guess the best way to explain my teaching experience is to tell you a story. As a young girl I wanted to be a teacher. I graduated from Worcester State College in January of 2009. My major course of study was economics. Along with economics, I took a variety of courses, including physics, and multiple US History courses. Besides economics I would say that these two subjects, along with writing and english composition are my key strengths besides my major area of study. Currently I am an assistant high school football coach and I responsible for two specific positions within the team.
