My teaching style is perhaps not as Socratic as I would prefer. I first elucidate the principles being considered, and then use a practical means to illustrate and work with that principle. I like to have the student learn to derive what is being taught for themselves. That way the material will stay with them. Grounding the material being learned in some real-life experience makes knowledge meaningful and useful. That is what I endeavor to achieve. While pursuing my Master's degree, I taught several sections on Civil Engineering principles. I also held office hours to tutor students in any other classwork where they were in need of assistance. For me, relating to children is effortless; I am quite apt to quickly gaining their attention as well as their confidence. I am not just having those answers for students, I will find out why students have those questions. I have earned BS in chemistry and MS in computer science. Since I'm not a teacher and don't follow a schedule or have designated hours, I feel like I can be a lot more patient and easy going with students. I'd like to pride myself in how well I can take a complex idea and break it down into its sub-parts and explain it simplistically. While in a class, students may not get the attention they require, which is why I like working one on one or in small groups as that way I can get a feel of what each student needs to meet his/her potential. As long as I could remember academics have come quite easily to me, from elementary school to current classes in college.
