I have been working with preschool to high school age students since 2004. I have always had tutoring positions, whether it was for my peers in college, volunteering for the Salvation Army, or running after school programs after graduating. I am a PA certified tutor, with conflict resolution, mentor, and CERT training (Community Emergency Rescue Team). It is important to me to have a profession where I feel that I am helping other people to progress in their lives. As a graduate of a sound Liberal Arts College, I've learned that the greatest asset I took away with me was the art of communication. I graduated from IUP with a degree in Biology Education. I am certified in Biology and Middle School Science. I taught for one semester at Central Bucks School District where I taught Academic Biology, Astronomy and Oceanography. I then taught two years at Gateway School District where I taught 8th grade physical science. I now have a permanent position at Yough School District where I teach 7th grade Life Science. I have been very successful in academics throughout my education. I was valedictorian of my high school, and I received the top honors in English, French, and Accounting. I also maintained a 4.0 average throughout my college education. I love working with children of all ages and abilities and helping them with academics. I don't believe I have a specific teaching style. I know that I have to be flexible and creative with each student. I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself. I my experience in learning and teaching anatomy, which revolves around learning concepts as well as brute memorization, each student, has learned in his or her own unique way. I have always been raised as a stellar student. The focus on education in my parents home was considered the only choice. I graduated top 10% of my high school class and went onto medical school overseas as I had moved back to Pakistan my native country. As an undergraduate I formally tutored fellow students in several subjects, including biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics (from basic algebra to calculus). As a graduate student, I mentored several undergraduate students in the laboratory. Some of these experiences culminated in presentations of data at national and international scientific conferences.
