Education needs to be engaging for learning to happen. It is best when lessons are augmented with games, skits, presentations, art or field trips. Information needs to be presented to students in ways they can absorb it, and I work patiently and enthusiastically with many different types of learners. I love learning, and I want to inspire you to a lifetime of learning.

My strategy to learning unknown subjects is very close to the same way children learn to walk, by immersion. Everything we learned as children was assimilated through watching, mimicking and attempting. I believe personal experience and learning are very close and in teaching I try to keep that in mind. I find myself a very visually inclined learner and utilize that to help others learn, such as drawing or watching videos. I have found that audio learners do well when given analogies and kinesthetic learners do well with drills or acting out what they have learned all to mimic what their learning so that it might sink in better much like how when we learned to say our first words.
My college experience was unique to the learning community. Instead of theorizing and contemplating what lives the subjects we studied were living, we lived amongst those most only read about. In additi ... read more

I have worked with children since 1991. My concentration during my undergraduate studies was neuroendocrinology. However, after attaining my B.A. in Psychology, I loved working with children so much that I decided to work in the mental health field, serving children and adolescents. During the last 3 years, I have been tutoring students in grades K-5 in language arts and math. For the last year and a half, I have tutored students who were suspected of having special needs. My background in psychology, clinical skills with the special needs population, and knowledge of best practices measures will help your child whether providing stimulating enrichment or bringing your child up to grade level.
My philosophy is that each student should be presented with the best opportunities for learning. I believe that each child is a unique individual with specific needs and learning styles such a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that once a student can enjoy the process of learning they can begin to internalize the good study habits required for academic success. I use a constructivist teaching method and often use Socratic teaching as a means to have students thinking independently about their work. I am also interested in learning how each student learns so as to get the best results. I believe I'm a natural teacher, enthusiastic, intelligent, and an unusual memory for detail. I enjoy creating interesting contexts for students to learn from, and the intuition to know when a student is making progress. Each student deserves a teacher’s very best, and I intend to know the needs of each student well and prepare myself for maximum efficiency.
I have worked as a teacher on the Big Island, and spent over ten years as a volunteer trainer at public access television facilities in New York and Texas. I ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have the ability to “adjust quickly to change” and love to multi-task. From living in Mexico D.F. at the age of sixteen, attending graduate school in London and now living in Hawaii, I have gained experience in multi-cultural environments and thrive in challenging settings.
After graduate school in the summer of 2003, I taught art at the Pathfinder Ranch in Idyllwild, CA for ten hours a day for three months with a very limited budget. From 2003-2004, I taught on-line students and acted as an academic enrollment counselor for high school students and their parents at Laurel Springs School, a home school in Ojai, CA. In 2005, I lectured and taught a yearlong AP Art History at Thacher, a well known, highly respected boarding school in Ojai, CA. Finally in 2006 I was an AmeriCorps Literacy tutor working with students at Canalino School in Carpinteria, CA, run through the Santa Barbar ... read more

Teaching is not my career, however, I have taught young children through 6th grade many years ago using a spoken system followed up by TV. Children learned the meaning of the words in context without having to translate each time. It was a fun interactive experience. This gave them a feel for the intonations and pronounciation of the language and a good sense of what they were communicating from repetition and use. The actual meanings fell into place much easier as well as structure. I have helped with translations on many occassions and offered assistance to friends who wished to travel and have basic speaking knowledge to communicate in their travels.
Languages have been an essentiasl part of my life. Having spoken English and Spanish as a child, I added French after living and studying numerous years in France (French high School) and Switzerland. I added German at the Univers ... read more
