I like to start tutoring students by determining what the student's strengths and weaknesses are and building a strategy from there. When a student doesn't understand a new concept, I like to go through every step of the process with them to figure out where the stumbling block is, using a variety of ways to explain the concept to assess which strategy works best for each student. Ultimately my goal is to see each student "get it" and overcome obstacles in learning math, so the student can independently understand new concepts enough to use them without much coaching.
I have 2 years experience in tutoring high-school and college-level math and computer science (programming and database design) while studying computer science in college from 1996-1998. As a graduate from University of Idaho, I was very much driven to reach a higher level of excellence in education, leadership, and support of my peers. I have earned a BS in Chemistry, which has allowed me to gain an understanding in many levels of science, not only how in how to learn but how to adapt those lessons for others. During the last eight years, throughout high school and college, I have tutored students in Engineering, psychology, mathematics, chemistry and biology. While much of my tutoring and teaching came through the University, I was also the Inter Fraternal Council study table coordinator, which required finding a way to teach a lot of non-science majoring students as well.
