Teaching is just a love for sharing the quest for knowledge

Laid back. I like to discover with the student, teaching them how to teach themselves in a way. My learning style, and therefore my teaching style, has always been to break a lesson down to its simplest form, and tweaking it to fit various situations. This way, the lesson is easier to remember, like learning to ride a bike.
I am currently a returning student at Arkansas State University, majoring in Computer Science, and minoring in Math and Graphic Design. I previously attended Arkansas Tech University, but withdrew due to financial reasons. In 2005, I became employed at Mid-South Community College, where my duties included helping students with computer questions and issues, as well as tutoring a few students in math. During my employment there, I taught a 5-week Intro to Computers course. The class consisted of a mix of traditional and non-traditional students.

Helpful tutor right next door!

My experience tutoring or teaching anything is from junior high with my fellow classmates to high school helping middle-schoolers. Now, in college, I help colleagues with similar studies. For example, I like to break down scientific terms by their roots. In doing so, my students not only remember what the terms mean for that class but can also apply that knowledge in future class work. My teaching style includes using the strengths of the interests of the child in teaching. To aid my child to read, I used his favorite card game (Yugioh) to aid him. I am hands on while teaching. I make sure that the learning is not boring. I will use card games to aid in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I use a combination of words plus visuals to aid the learner. I will write down the formulas or work out a problem for the student so that the example can be followed on other problems. I use acronyms for teaching as well. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that each student has their own style of learning and soak up information differently then other students. I myself like to learn visually and hands on. I have tried many styles of learning to see what works for me. I record lectures, take my own notes, like to question myself while I'm studying for a test. I think connecting something to something you already know will help you retain that new information very well.
