Vastly experienced, encouraging and patient tutor.

To teach reading, I teach the children to use all the reading strategies used by good readers.Examples of those strategies would be sight words, visual and context clues, and phonics. Then, I prefer to use leveled readers to improve their fluency and comprehension. For writing, after assessing their composition, I work with them to improve where needed skills such as organization, elaboration, complex sentences and transitions. I use hands on materials and lots of practice to teach math.
I taught grades kindergarten, first grade and second grade for a total of twenty-six years. Since then, I have tutored pre-k through 5th grade. My last assignment was tutoring a fifth grader in writing composition. I have worked as a tutor with several children on their reading, spelling and math skills. I worked as a UIL coach for creative writers in second grade.

My comments on tutoring Homework Help : Exam prep, writing papers, organizing notes and class assignments and more.

Master's degree from Louisiana State University. I find it rewarding to watch students develop skills they need for success! Study skills allow students to work smarter, not harder! Organizing, developing and writing research papers are strengths of mine. For many years I have tutored and taught students with a variety of learning disabilities.
Student focused, active teaching of study skills, frequent feedback, to build skills in areas needing improvement!

I take a servant leadership, customer-oriented approach to my responsibilities. I routinely try to answer the following question: What can I do to help students achieve their goals? For research papers, I encouraged students to pursue their own interests, such as a subject related to their major, in order to give them a better opportunity to enjoy the research process as opposed to merely fulfilling an exercise requirement.
From January 2006 through August 2008, I worked part-time as a freshman composition instructor, writing lab tutor, and teaching assistant for the English department at UNT. As an instructor, I taught two classes per long semester and one, intensive summer session. During the fall semesters, I taught Composition I, which introduced students to a variety of writing concepts, such as the personal essay and the visual text. The students wrote five papers, thre ... read more

My comments on tutoring Homework Help : There are a lot of fun, strategic and organized way to get homework done without feeling like torture. I would be able to help guide homework time to make it feel less like a burden and more like an accomplishment.

I am individually based and able to change my teaching style to best fit the students needs.
I worked for an organization called AS220. It is an arts organization with a youth program that works inside the juvenile detention facility and also has a community program for youth in group homes and recently released from prison. My first position was incorporated art into the curriculum of classrooms in the juvenile detention facility to enhance the learning experience of the students by making it hands-on. My end position was as Managing Director. During that time, I studied and implemented art programs to teach job readiness skills and finding innovative ways for learning to take place. Since that time, I have spent the last 3 years as an events manager on a cruise ship, seeing places all over the world. I have also co-lead a 2 1/2 week canoe trip with 6 teenagers. Educated professional - Alternative tutor

I worked in after school progrmas all through college and generally enjoy helping children study. I am very engaging, patient and relate well to any age child or young adult. I am not a proto-typical, traditional "tutor" in that I never studied education in a pedagogical sense, but I am highly educated and always made high grades in every level of school. I may can help where the traditonal teachers/tutors have been unsuccessful. I have no specialized training related to ADD/ADHD other than I have been diagnosed as such since high school. I learned to thrive in light of it and feel like I have insight into those with the same diagnosis.

I graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a BS in Corporate Communication Studies. During my final semester as an undergraduate, I applied for Teach For America and was accepted as a 2014 Corps Member in the Rio Grande Valley. Part of my Teach For America Summer Institute required corps members to teach summer school at Houston ISD campuses, where I taught middle school math at Patrick Henry MS. I was hired by Harlingen HCISD for the 2014-2015 academic year at the Harlingen School of Health Professions as an Algebra I instructor. I will continue teaching at my campus for the 2015-2016 academic year.

I've always had a love of learning, and have naturally slipped into an informal tutor role with friends. During high school I took several AP tests and at the same time earned the International Baccalaureate diploma, so I understand very well the pressures involved. My two bachelor's degrees (Computer Science & Engineering) give me a strong foundation in math and science. I have experience as a teaching assistant for undergraduates. In addition, for several summers I participated as a volunteer in my public library's reading program, working one-on-one with children of all ages. I feel quite confident in English thanks to my habit of recreational reading and writing, along with extensive experience writing papers, reports, and the like.
I firmly believe that you learn best when you're having fun. Once a topic fascinates you, your mind automatically engages more, which helps you ... read more
