A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching philosophy involves connecting with individual students. One of my strengths is identifying strong points in a student’s performance and teaching him to tap into successful facets of his/her performance. In English, I was trained in (and advocate) “Faulkner English” as developed by Claude Faulkner and taught at the University of Arkansas. This method employs a certain amount of deconstruction of sentences, beginning with the most simple, and can be geared to any level. In French, I do use some repetition, and, yes, memorizing conjugations, as a means of making material available to the student. I also use linguistic games, skits, simple verses and play, when appropriate.

The primary obligation of a tutor is to show the pupil that big, intimidating chunks of academic work, whether they be assignments, units, or even entire classes, can be broken down into logical sequences of more manageable parts. To accomplish that, I focus first on my demeanor. When struggling in school, it is easy to panic, and if the tutor is relaxed, calm, and deliberate, then that catches on and the session can proceed in a level-headed manner. Also, I make sure that the sessions are reliably structured. We look first at the syllabus, then at the assignment at hand, and articulate what exactly needs to be accomplished. In a nutshell, I taught high school English for eleven years. I am passionate about all facets of education in the classroom and the real world. I have much to offer my students whether it be a love of literature, grammar and vocabulary or life itself! I love to teach.
