A Little Bit About Me...

I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.
I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.

College students are difficult to work with because they think they know it all. This was a blessing in disguise because it taught me not only to learn different ways to tutor a student, but also to figure out through body language and little signals as to whether or not they were actually comprehending the information. Teaching is not just giving information and hoping they retain it. My teaching style consists of teaching, asking questions to ensure they know or understand the material, and exercising hands-on work and examples to ensure the student can apply what they have learned.

My teaching-style is rigorous yet kind. My students say that no one has ever criticized their writing and thought so thoroughly and constructively. I'm known for my patience working with students with foreign-language backgrounds and other disabilities such as a lack of attention and focus. In 2005 I graduated from the University of West Florida, earning a BA in psychology with a 3.5 GPA. During that time I was vice president of an on-campus meditation group that lead people in meditation and relaxation techniques. I began tutoring high school and college students in 1986. I have 6 children of my own who I have raised and taught science and mathematics. I worked 2 years as an adjunct professor at the University of Florida and was a volunteer instructor at Brigham Young University. I speak Japanese fluently and am semi fluent in German.
