Ashley Frankian- Special Educator, Ell instructor

I am a strategic based teacher that enhances my students learning through finding their own particular learning style. Each student has and individualized learning approach to their studies. Once they find what works for them, they will succeed. It is my job as an educator to help them find that out. I like to use a multi modality approach so that students learn all different types of learning styles, this way they may pick and choose certain styles that work for them. For example, If the students are writing about a short story they have read, to help them get their thoughts on to paper, I would assist them with graphic organizers to prompt them to list of jot down vocabulary words or important people places or things in the story however, in a manner that helps them to do this with a proper beginning, middle and end. All of this is visually designed on the graphic organizer to help the ... read more

As an early childhood teacher, I have had several opportunities to help children (school age), to do homework. I also was a tutor in high school to a boy for just Algebra, which then turned around to being all of his subjects and helping him keep on track. The hardest thing for me was that he had only lived in the U.S. for four years, and had trouble speaking English. After each session of tutoring, I would grab the Scrabble board, which encouraged him to use more words, learn new words, and have fun while doing so.
I like to get to the point of certain problems, such as reading the child/student when I see them, ask them some questions about the subjects they need help in and why they need help. I have worked with Infants-School age for over 5 years, and enjoy being there to help someone in need. I believe in giving back, because so many of us are blessed already.

I have spent a lifetime educating myself and participating in professional development and then giving back my knowledge and skills to those that may benefit. I have found that I frequently learn as much from those that I teach as they learn from me. My History degree is not only a passion but the research and analytical skills I have learned help me present information in a way that is easy to understand and comprehend. As an Aquatic Education instructor I embraced those that were concerned about our environment and encouraged ideas to resolve issues.
Regardless of the demographics of the student population in the classroom, I have learned that it is as important to listen as it is to present information. I encourage participation in classromm subjects yet maintain control and functionality of the class so that the lesson is not lost in the discussion. It is rewarding to see the i ... read more

Some people learn by talking, some tactically by doing, some visually by example. It depends on the student, or I devise a presentation that involves all three ways of presenting the information. I believe that learning and understanding the value of what is being learned is as important as the content.
I am a doer who has shared his knowledge and experience in a variety of ways. When I worked as a photographer and filmmaker, I taught those subjects at many different institutions, from an after-school program for elementary school kids to NYU Graduate School. For many years now, I have worked as a science writer and editor. I mentor many newly minted Chinese scientists and engineers who work for IBM in Beijing, teaching them both English grammar and the proper form and style for peer-reviewed scientific papers they are writing. For over three years I worked as a writing tutor for Southern Utah University's Writing Center where I helped students improve both their academic and creative writing. As an undergraduate at SUU, I also taught poetry writing to high school students and facilitated creative writing workshops. I have also tutored students in reading and mathematics. While much of my formal education is in English, I am a student of multiple disciplines. I am currently pursuing a BS in physics and recently completely one year at the University of Utah
As a teacher, I bring passion for both creativity-based and logic-based subjects. I don't subscribe to the right-brain/left-brain paradigm. I believe students can be strong in both mathematics and writing, and it is my desire to help students realize this, because so few people do. My basic tutoring practice is to let the student do most of the ... read more

I am a firm believer that each student learns differently and the best way to teach is to find out what their style of learning is. I am a patient teacher, who works hard to find the learning style that will offer the best success for the student.
As a recent college graduate, I received a dual degree in Electrical/Computer & Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. During my time there, I was a teaching assistant for Calculus I for two years. This job included conducting one hour classes 2-4 times a week to review and master basic skills needed to accomplish the course successfully. I also spent time weekly working one-on-one with students to teach concepts and review topics. I consider myself capable of helping students in any level of math up to this level and thoroughly enjoy it!

Students have different learning styles, so I try to adapt my tutoring style to best suit the needs of the student. I have a unique ability to explain complicated concepts on a simple level. I try to make sure that the student really understands the concepts, rather than just teaching him or her to mechanically do the work. When working on problems, I generally use an interactive approach, in which I ask the student questions designed to direct his or her thinking in the right direction. In this way, the student is deeply involved and is encouraged to think and to use what he or she does know to figure out what is needed. This also gives the student confidence in his or her own ability.

I have a BA in Microbiology and an MA in Zoology. I have 7-8 years experience teaching biology, ecology, microbiology and environmental science at the college level. In addition I have many years experience in software engineering, technical writing, software quality assurance, and technical editing.
In the classroom I rely on traditional lecture, supplemented by Powerpoint presentations, animations, and lists and diagrams on the white board. I usually assign a research paper. In the last few semesters I've implemented through Blackboard some online testing, as well as tutorial "homework" quizzes, where the students get feedback directing them to coverage of particular sections of the text. I always try to make students aware of how the detailed, technical concepts of the moment fit into the "big picture," making references both to material previously covered and to material y ... read more

My teaching style is to review the fundamentals. If I find deficiencies, I address these first. I then introduce the subject core using applications that the student can relate to. I get students to participate in solving problems by working through the steps in turn. I keep track of student preparation for accreditation by giving home work assignments. I keep notes on lessons and student progress. While offering words of encouragement, I keep the student informed about the progress and indicate that there is still time for excellence.
As an Engineering major I tutored students in Math for 2 years to pay for my education. The subjects that I have taught include Calculus, Trigonometry, Algebra, Geometry and Arithmetic, grades 8 through 12. I am familiar with GED requirements. Throughout my life, I have always had an ability to talk with and to listen to adolescents. Regardless of a student’s academic aptitude, socio-economic status, or learning differences, I honestly believe that each student has the ability and the right to learn about the world around them and to be helped by adults in their life-path and individual growth. As a teacher planning lessons, I deliberately infuse the learning with opportunities for student choice, intellectual growth, and explorations into interconnected themes, ideas, and questions. I know that all students can be highly successful, if provided the opportunity to interact with engaged and thoughtful teachers.
As a person who truly values learning, I have continuously engaged in being both a student and a teacher in academically rigorous studies. With over 14 years of professional education experience, including hig ... read more
