Creative Writing is one of my top subjects!

During my four years at Binghamton University, I’ve taken many opportunities as a graphic designer. I’ve had a lot of experience using programs such as InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. In my four years I’ve learned the importance of typography and strong typographic layout skills. I’ve helped several campus clubs in designing posters for events, meetings, and advertising for spring fling activities. I’ve also worked with the local chapter of the Sierra Club and designed shirts and brochures for one of their campaigns. In the classroom I learned how to work with Adobe’s Creative Suite. My assigned projects included a wide range of work including: brochures, logos for community businesses, advertisement campaigns, posters, and business identity manuals. My experience in the field has taught me good time management skills, communication skills and the importance of teamwork.

I love to teach and see the ideas light up the eyes of the person who suddenly got a concept. I think teaching should be adaptable and should fit the learning style of the student. Visual tasks, memory games, and hands-on-learning are, in my opinion, the best way to help someone truly learn (versus rote memory). I think that with the right guidance and put in the right environment, anyone can learn. I look forward to being that "right guidance."

During a span of 20 years as reporter, sports writer, copy editor, section editor and editor-in-chief, I trained many new hires -- and even a few veterans -- in spelling, grammar, punctuation, comprehension of written material and in writing. I did not take graduate classes, but I did take the Graduate Record Exam. I scored in the upper 15% in both Verbal and Essay. I do not consider myself a classically trained scholar or academic. It is very important to let children know that there is no wrong or right way of doing their work, as long as it is done correctly. They also need to know that their methods are their own. Children needs reassurance. When A childs' work is not done to one's full potential, it is not my strategy to make them feel like less of a child. It is however, my strategy to work with that child until he/she understands WHY the work was not done correctly, and then let him/her correct the work themself. This in my opinion, lets a child know that we believe in him/her. That is the most important lesson a child can learn. That they are their own person and that they all have the potential to achieve the goals set for them.

I facilitate learning best when I discover how students process information, for I am able to present information in uniquely meaningful ways. Therefore, I encourage discussions and ask questions regularly, and change teaching strategies promptly as needed. Second, I believe that students learn best from actively engaging the material.
