I taught high-school math for 14 years, everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, in both public and private schools. I also have extensive writing experience, including for many newspapers, and am currently teaching Political Science at the Community-College level. Thus, I could tutor math, and/or any subject or assignment that required verbal and writing skills. I tutored UTK athletes in math and philosophy, and proctored Pre-Calculus at UTK as well.
My teaching style can be called old-fashioned: the best results come from patient, focused, disciplined time on task. To learn math one must work a variety of problems, and practice them diligently. The teaching style that brings the best success I've found is centered on two points. First of all, it is based on listening, which means getting the student to talk. Eventually, with guidance, I aim to get them the ability to talk through and solve any problem. The second major technique I like to use is analogies. Even complicated subjects can be simplified into their core components which are easy to understand if taught as an analogy to something more familiar in daily life.
