Love the Feeling of Helping Others Achieve Their Goals!

The vast majority of my experience has been obtained throughout my time in college and my willingness to help fellow students and/or friends in a variety of studies. My studies throughout college primarily consist of the sciences, including chemistry, biology, and physics. My willingness to help others is where my want to tutor stems from.
Teaching style varies depending on the student, but I always strive to pique their interest in certain areas by relating it to their everyday experiences. I believe interactive learning is most efficient and enjoyable, including examples and activities.

I have training in the Balanced Literacy program in which the word study, reading objectives, and writers' workshop are combined in a one and a half hour block of student driven, teacher facilitated activities. These are ultimately shared in a whole group and or one on one setting. When tutoring, I do a very brief mini lesson on the objective and we go immediatley into the task at hand with instant feedback and adaptation between the reader or writer and myself as we progress through the lesson. If the student is hung on vowel digraphs, we stop and examine those and do word work with several examples. My next choices for them to read would have more vowel digraphs. If my student is confused about where to put the punctuation in a quotation, we will do several real world scenerios where he will write statements, questions, and exclaimations correcting as we go along. These are just a f ... read more

My goal is to provide the best educational experience for my students. I truly enjoy working with young people and helping them learn. I believe that all children can learn regardless of abilities and backgrounds when provided with the appropriate learning environment. I also believe that each child is unique and has different styles of learning, and how these students learn should be incorporated as part of their learning experience to help these students reach their academic potential. I am a strong believer in the constructivist approach to learning and will use this approach whenever appropriate to assist students in their learning experiences.

Education is the process of guiding children or adults in the experience of learning meaning of things. In other words, teaching words without establishing a proper sense of the meaning of those words dulls the intellectual life. I believe everyone can learn if they are encouraged to seek the significance of the subject they are learning. Moreover, each time a child improves in regard to their motives and vitality while learning, a greater sense of accomplishment can be experienced by both the teacher and the student.
Presently, I work as a teacher's assistant in special education. I earned a BA in English Literature from one of the finest private colleges in the Southeast. I believe in inquiry based learning, or teaching any subject by incorporating the student's natural curiosity and drawing connections to their interests. I don't taking a long time to teach a student how to approach a single problem or concept and foster their understanding of the material so that they will understand how to approach the problem on their own. In other words, I put energy into explaining why they should do something so that they can reason through it themselves in a test situation.

When getting my Bachelor's degree, English was my chosen major. I chose the subject because I love to read and write, and excel at both of those things. In high school and college, I tutored middle and high school - aged children. I was able to find and help those kids because my parents were teachers; thus, so were their friends who needed tutors. As a professional editor and writer, I have the experience necessary to help these kids grasp one of the harder languages, English. French was my language in high school and I took Russian in college. I plan on participating in an acclerated program to learn Spanish next summer.
My teaching style is very matter-of-fact and flexible. Some students learn by listening, others by reading, and still more by doing. It is my job to determine which students need which type of teaching. It's important to never let the student feel I am judging hi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Assuming that most students would rather be anywhere than an English class, I listen to their interests of the moment and then relate them to my goals. I explore their previous knowledge and build on that, avoiding either boring them or talking over their heads. I listen, we laugh, and then I reel them in, constantly showing them how my goals are relevant to their ultimate desires. Fast, if not immediate, feedback is essential to keeping students motivated, as is elaborate explanation of why they scored what they score. Therefore, students see themselves as in control of their own learning, with a benevolent and knowledgeable mentor easing them along.
I have taught English to students at levels from seventh graders through college freshmen. My M.A. in English Literature equipped me to inspire both eager and reluctant students to write and read with confidence and capability. As a r ... read more

I have been a full-time (and quite busy) professional tutor for the past five years. I currently work as an independent tutor through The Tutor Connection and Wyzant, as well as my personal tutoring service. While living in California in 2007, I was employed by the San Diego Board of Education as a tutor for the AVID program, a group style tutoring initiative to assist high school students with difficulties and increase their motivation to learn. Upon my return to Knoxville, before becoming a full-time private tutor, I tutored U.T. student athletes as an employee of the University of Tennessee. When I was in grammar school, high school, and college, I regularly tutored my friends in areas they had difficulty with.
Through experience and research, I have developed a tutoring style that has helped countless students achieve unmeasured success. My students usually respond very well ... read more
