A Little Bit About Me...

I would describe my teaching style as patient, caring, and creative. My goal is to make sure my students feel comfortable and relaxed enough to absorb the information we are working on. I believe that all children have the capacity to learn if they are guided by the right educator. My goal is to help my students learn enough so they eventually can work independently. I find that my students really enjoy my style of teaching, and feel that I am always available for them. They are relaxed with me and feel comfortable enough to let their guard down and be open to learning. One of the greatest joys I have is teaching a child to learn. Learning can be fun and I try to let them see that!

I would have to say that my teaching style is flexibility. I believe that it is necessary to gauge your students as a group and individually before deciding on which teaching methods would be most effective. I believe that naturalistic teaching is important. I also believe in a form of discrete trial training. It takes some of the basics from Discrete Trial and adapts them to fit the needs of the students that are struggling with certain subjects. Research has proven that all students learn differently and lessons cannot be taught primarily through auditory learning. A teacher especially one in the younger grades must engage in auditory, visual, tactile, kinestics and other learning methods.

I am a veteran teacher with HQ status. I believe passion and the persistent pursuit of excellence is what distinguishes a “good teacher” from a “Highly Qualified “one. I have taught Elementary Education for 6 years and Physical Education for 6 years. I am proficient in a variety of curriculums including, but not limited to; Lucy Calkins, Mondo, Six Traits, Investigations, 105 ELL training hours, Everyday Math, Scott Foresman, Houghton-Mifflin, Step Up To Write, DERA, DRA and Core Knowledge approach. I believe it is the different curriculums, when given in combination that allow all students to be successful. Students should be encouraged to explore and discover new ways to problem-solve and form new ideas.
Throughout my teaching experience, I have taught in diverse school districts that range considerably in socio-economic backgrounds. This experience has molded me in to a com ... read more

As a former HS Math teacher in NYC I have great experience working with students that many other teachers regard as "difficult". As a product of NYC public schools I was well suited to work with such students and had great success in helping them achieve their academic goals and make better choices in their lives. I often encounter students who thank me for the help and orientation I provided at a time when it would have been all too easy to succumb to peer pressure and make wrong choices.
I am especially well versed at helping students that have great difficulty in learning subjects such as math. I have developed new teaching methods that are extremely effective. I have been able to help many disaffected students who had given up on themselves and who other teachers viewed s hopeless cases. I am a very hands on person, who believes that with patience each person can learn. Some people must understand that each person learns in a different way. I do not believe that people should compare one child to the next, because it is unfair.

As a graduate student I have extensive experience in writing papers and doing extensive research. I have worked as a newsroom researcher in the past. At Long Island University I have worked as a graduate assistant, and a Tutor. I also have experience in working with students in after school programs.

I have had the opportunity to tutor students in various subjects (eg. math, biology, English, science). I have also had the privilege to work with students at the elementary, high school and university levels. My passion for teaching, love for helping others achieve their highest potential and vast experience working with youth have led me to pursue a career in teaching. I graduated from Biomedical Sciences, and shortly after began studying Medicine. I soon realized it wasn't the career for me and I decided to switch paths and follow my heart, and go into teaching. I applied for teacher’s college for September 2011 in Canada and New York. For this reason, I currently have much free time and energy that I wish to direct towards tutoring.
