I have three children who my wife and I have homeschooled over the past ten years. I have an associates degree of applied science and criminal justice and a bs in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis area on criminology, sociology and business. Not only being a teacher, tutor and mentor to my children I have also taught Sunday school for grades first through fifth. I help mentor teenagers from the church during the summers. I have also used tutors mysef and know how beneficial they are and hope to be as benefial to others as they have been to me. I realize that learning reading and writing skills can be difficult. When I teach young people, I work to push each person patiently but constantly to improve with each lesson. Each person learns a little differently, and I like to learn the student’s strengths and weaknesses and work from there. I support hands-on learning. There is only so much a person can talk about writing. The best way to learn writing is to write. The best way to improve reading comprehension is to read. Reading unlocks vocabulary. And a good vocabulary helps in written and verbal communication. My passion for teaching these skills comes from my belief that they matter and that I’m helping someone with a skill that will help them succeed.

I grew up with both partents in the public education system, I was a student-teacher in H.S. and I earned a bachelor degree in Parks, Recreation, Natural Resource Management with a minor in Art Education. After graduation I taught Art and pre-school classes for the Springfield, MO Parks Dept. I was a librarian at the Springfield Art Museum. I worked for the Dept. of Social Services, Div. of Youth Services for 14 years and assisted the teachers with the education ciriculum. I am a very patient teacher. If it seems someone is 'just not getting it' I will try a different approach. People learn at different levels, and what works for one does not always work for another; therefore,finding the way for each individual student is the key. I have also found that most people learn a task by 'hands on' learning, not listening to how it should be done. In this situation, giving someone the tools to do the work themselves gives them the confidence to do it, and feel good about conquering the challenge.
