I believe that children learn in a variety of ways and teachers are responsible for providing this variety. I like many teachers, have a constructivist approach. I also understand that students learn through various means and approaches, and teachers must be aware and knowledgeable of the means and approaches necessary to maximize learning and present proper accomodations when needed.
After achieving a bachelors of mathematics from Kent State University, I obtained a long-term substitute teaching certificate in integrated mathematics grades 7-12. I taught in an alternative school for more than a year from 2008-2009. In addition, I obtained employment in a traditional school for the remaining six weeks of the 2009-2010 school year. I believe that instructional strategies should be varied and flexible. Students are unique and their learning styles are different. Teachers need to have varied instructional strategies to try and meet the needs of the diversity of their students. I believe that knowledge of subject matter is extremely important, but not the sole component in instruction. In Mathematics, teachers need to have an understanding of mathematics as well as methods for transferring this knowledge to students. A Language Arts teacher may be knowledgeable about reading and writing, but has to find creative, interesting methods and activities to make students want to learn.

When a question is asked, I am not going to simply just tell the student the answer. I would want them to think it out and try and figure it out for themselves. I would however guide them in the right direction and even ask them other questions they may know in order for them to figure out the intial problem. I feel that these types of interactions are a more effective way of learning. Also, writing things down helps tremedously because not only are you thinking it, but you're seeing it and reading it as well. I am a very easy person to get along with, and I am also very encouraging. I enjoy helping others whether it's in an academic environment or not.
