Patient and Supportive, but always Persistent

I have logged over 5,000 hours of tutoring in the last four years. I believe strongly in adapting to the students style of learning. There is no "one size fits all" in learning. I think it is important to go beyond teaching the facts by exploring the bigger picture. Development of critical thinking skills should go hand in hand with teaching the test materials.

I have worked at the Salem State University writing center for the last two years. At the writing center, I work with students on papers in all subjects, from math to English. My experience at the center has helped me develop methods for helping students plan and organize papers, and also for addressing grammar and style issues. I also have a lot of experience working with ESL students.
I consider myself a very laid back person and am flexible in terms of addressing the student's concerns. I primarily work in subjects related to writing. My training is in philosophy, so I tend to focus on helping students develop strong reasoning/arguing skills and a precise voice. My comments on tutoring Writing : I see writing as a necessity and a strong tool for communication that all students need, no matter what career they eventually choose to pursue.

I recently graduated from Gordon College with a degree in English Literature and a concentration in Creative Writing. Any student willingly to learn, deserves a chance.

My comments on tutoring Writing : I graduated from Fitchburg State University with a Minor in Professional Writing. Published short fiction in the college literary magazine and currently submitting to private publications.

I believe in identifying where a student lies on the subject he/she is studying before going further. The advantage of one on one tutoring compared to classroom is that the lesson can be based around where the student’s strengths and weaknesses are rather than a blanket method. I also believe that the skills used in English can be best practiced and analyzed through writing rather than worksheets and tests. Therefore, I believe in having the student write on a variety of subjects and working through these pieces to show where they can improve.
