PhD Physics, able to tutor in science, math, engineering

I was a senior scientist - engineer for 37 years. I retired to care for my comatose wife at home, and she died a few months later. This situation has left me open to new directions. My teaching experience has been 3 years as a graduate teaching assistant, and 2 years as a tutor to friends and family in science and mathematics. I like to instill in students a desire to learn. It makes it easier for them to have fun learning and easier for me to teach them new subjects. My first goal as a tutor, especially in reading and writing, is to connect with the student and find a topic that interests them. One of the biggest issues faced by struggling students is that they often don't identify with the problems. For a struggling reader this might mean not enjoying the subject matter of his/her book, and a for a student behind in math it may mean not seeing a real world application for the problems. I will work with the students and find where out where they are weakest. By doing so I will be able to give them the knowledge required to understand the material they are struggling with instead of teaching them how to solve the problem at that moment which will prevent them from struggling with mathematics their entire school career.
