For subjects like math, it is simple to develop a step by step method for the students to write down and follow. Once the students have mastered the steps they are motivated to continue with the material because it seems straightforward. It is also important to have the students connect to the material; if they understand how the information is used in every day life then they will become more excited and motivated to learn. Once the students have a firm understanding of the information, they are assigned independent problems. These problems will help the students begin to think on their own and in turn own the material.
