I believe every person has her or his own learning style. The best way to get a child to understand her or his own potential is to get to know each individual student. It takes a little more time, but making sure each student knows I care about their individual success has enabled me to teach those who never thought they would be able to speak in public to do so. I actually started tutoring while I was still in college, helping out one of the science/math teachers, and proctoring classes when she needed me to. I have a BS in Natural Science with a biology emphasis, from which I've gained knowledge in most areas of science and math. Besides helping to teach in college, I also was a tutor for three years, in several subjects including Chemistry, Algebra, Calculus I and II, Physics, and more. I also was a member of the English Honor Society, where I proof-read papers for students once a week.
