None of my family had gone to college, so it was predicted I would not either. I had a hunger to learn, so I systematically worked full-time and studied part-time, earning eight major degrees in cities where they alowed residency rquirements to be met in such a way. I was young and energetic, so it was a lot of work, but a joy. It took about 15 years to finally earn my doctorate. Along the way, I earned certification in a half dozen fields (especially loved English, social stuides, and psychology). I was employed for decades in education, teaching full-time for five years, often teaching on the side when I was counselor or administrator. Except for my earliest years of employment (where I was often employed full-time in radio or newspaper), I often tutored along the way. I have been able to tutor part-time a good many years since I often come across young people (and adults) who ... read more

When teaching mathematics, I believe that over half of my job is social skills. Calming my students down, easing their frustration, and making them feel comfortable is over half the battle. It isn't that mathematics is too hard for most people, it is just too frustrating for most people. So my job is to set my client at ease and to create a learning environment. Once that learning environment is created, teaching is easy. I have worked with difficult students. One, who we will call John, has Autism, Schizophrenia, and vomits when upset. It was my job to teach John how to count money. After trying a variety of methods, we eventually found that learning in traditional environments was too stressful for John. So, we played Monopoly. People had been trying to teach him to count money for months, maybe years. Three weeks after I started with him, I took him to Walmart with a ha ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a substitute teacher with the Boise School District for the past 6 years now. I have also worked for the company, Club Z tutoring. I have both a Bachelors degree as well as a Masters degree (academically) but still need to pass the Praxis II test and then student teach before I can apply for my own classroom. I prefer working with elementary age students and my speciality areas are reading, grammar, spelling, and some math. I have a high GPA of 3.8 and most of my Masters classes have enabled me to gain an understanding of reading and grammatical principles. As part of my Masters program I tutored a 5th grade girl in reading over the summer which enabled her to raise her reading and comprehension to "proficient".
I enjoy working with all children. I believe all children can learn, but each in different ways. To be an effective teacher/tutor, I must first learn the stu ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As I was tutoring fellow students in high school, I realized I wanted to teach. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education. I chose, then, to go into the business of training and consulting rather than work for the Public School System. I have fifteen years experience in needs analysis and consulting, twelve years experience in personal computer training, eight years experience designing curricula and training materials, four years experience in computer sales management, two years experience as substitute teacher, and very recent experience preparing a child with learning disabilities to re-enter the regular classroom using the Davis Learning Strategies System. I am well versed in many subjects, including math, science, reading, writing, French, music, and computer applications; I have a lifelong penchant for learning and passion for teaching what I learn.
