I enjoy working in both special education and elementary education. It think it is important to set a child up for success by doing what is needed to aid that student. Weather it be modified lessons or guided practice with the student so he/she can eventually work independently. It is important to teach skills and tips/techniques the student can apply to be able to complete the assignment on their own. I have modified work in a variety of ways depending on the individual students learning style. When appropriate, work is completed individual, small or large group. I enjoy hands on work that engages the student and creating themed lessons that encompass many subjects and concepts.

My teaching style is really one of encouragement, love, belief, knowledge, honesty and respect. I believe that children need to know that you are truely concerned for them before they really want to know how much knowledge you can dispense to them. As an elementary student in the 4th grade I had a reading deficiency and was reading on a 1st grade level. It my parents and tutors that gave the encouragement to continue trying and the self-esteem to know that I could do it. They all believed in me and it was through their belief that I began to believe in myself. This lesson has stuck with me throughout all of my education. Additionally, I have always struggled with ADD. My parents chose to try and redirect my energies and teach me ways to do the same. All of these struggles in life allows me to gravitate to the student who is in need because I know that I can be an example of someo ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.
I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching students in classrooms, small group settings and individually for the past seven years. I begin with my students by assessing their strengths and building on them so that students are aware of their successes and are confident to atttempt new material. I am certified to teach a variety of subjects and ages and enjoy the individual attention and progress that results from it.
My teaching style is relaxed, but consistent and firm. I expect assignments to be completed and timely, and spend the time with the student instructing and revising. I ask that parents are a part of the experience.
