My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I use a multisensory approach espoused by the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction. Sight, sound, and neurological pathways to develop reading skills are utilized.

I am a patient, easy-going man with high standards and expectations for my students.
I have been a special needs teacher (k-8 moderate disabilities) for seven years, and an Orton-Gillingham instructor for eight years. Prior to my certifications I worked as a volunteer in Boston, Weymouth, and Quincy schools. I earned a Bachelor's in Literature and history in 1993, and am confident about my ability to work with all types of students in all areas of academics. I am a teacher in a substantially separate classroom for children with emotional disabilities. I also work with autistic children each summer in a social skills program. I have co-taught in the general education classroom over the years, and consider myself experienced and well-schooled in all facets of special and general education. I have also tutored children with reading disabilities over the years with great success (no m ... read more

My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : As a dyslexic student myself, I have intimate knowledge of the possible difficulties with learning a new language.

During the last two years of my undergraduate career I worked as an Arabic and Economics tutor in the Academic Resource Center at Tufts University. With respect to Arabic, I worked with Beginner and Intermediate level students - extensively using Al-Kitaab. Being dyslexic, I have an intimate knowledge of the difficulties that dyslexic students face when learning a new language, especially with an abjad like Arabic. I also have considerable "teaching" experience due to my time working as a personal trainer.
As a student, I understand the importance of a good teacher. I always try and help the student find and correct their own mistakes, rather than merely giving them the corrections. I have found that the listening is one of the most important tools that a tutor has at their disposal: in my experience, the student knows where their weaknesses and difficulties lie, even if they are u ... read more

As a professional educator it is my responsibility to make sure that all my students are given the skills and tools they need to help them to be successful in their next grade level. I currently teach AM/PM kindergarten which means I have to find fun and engaging ways to teach students all the skills they need to acquire in kindergarten in half the time that many of my fellow kindergarten teachers. I also have experience teaching preschoolers, ages 3-5 years old, both with and without disabilities. That job taught me to adapt lesson plans for all age and ability levels. I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Child and Family Studies, along with an Early Childhood (birth-age 8) teaching license, and at this time I am pursuing my Master’s in Special Education.
My favorite thing about teaching is when my students finally understand and make a connection to what I have been teaching them. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that all children learn best when they experience success. Therefore, I make sure to give all my students opportunities to succeed by asking questions that challenge students to think but are not impossible to answer. My teaching style involves a combination of constructivism and direct instruction. Instead of lecturing, I pose questions, calling on students randomly. When I restate what is correct about a student's answer, my students understand that they have successfully contributed to the learning process. I point out any misconceptions that might arise before they do, so my students avoid making common mistakes. I supplement my lessons with visual representations and videos for visual learners, as well as hands-on, inquiry-based activities for tactile learners. I have extensive experience using technology in the classroom and have designed many interesting laborator ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have often found that educators "believe all children can learn". Throughout my career I have put those words into practice. Since graduating from Boston College, I have worked with students who were at the highest level of the educational spectrum and those who were not given the opportunities or the attention they needed to show their true academic capabilities. I believe in understanding where students are before you decide where they need to go, and that necessitates careful listening to the student. I am patient, thoughtful, and thorough, though my best character trait is that I have a way of making students know that I believe they can succeed.
Education is very much my vocation. I began teaching and tutoring during high school, and I have worked with students in every grade from pre-school through freshman year of college. I studied history as an undergraduate because ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In my first teaching position, I worked with emotionally disturbed and learning disabled students at the elementary level in the South Bronx. This included providing individual, small group and whole class instruction to students with learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, and multiple disabilities. In my second and third year teaching, I worked at The Guild for the Blind on West 65th Street in New York City. It was a not-for-profit, non-sectarian agency that served persons of all ages who were visually impaired and multidisabled to achieve lives of dignity. In my particular class, there were six children, three assistants, one teacher and two health aides. All of my students were multiply and developmentally disabled and I had to accommodate all their levels of needs. I am currently teaching at a private Special Education school in Newton, MA. Here, I am teaching World Hi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Whether I am helping a student with prioritizing assignments, studying for tests, teaching study skills, or guiding him or her process of writing papers, I strive to promote metacognitive awareness throughout the tutoring experience. Students ultimately need to develop an awareness of how they learn best and what strategies work for them. It is my job to facilitate this process while yielding improved academic results through collaboration with students along the way.
Over the course of my years as a Learning Specialist in a university setting, and as Master Tutor Certified by The College Reading and Learning Association, I have developed and refined successful techniques with students who may struggle with the following: executive functioning issues, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, Asberger’s Syndrome, English as a Second Language, and various non-verbal learning disabilities. I believe that that goal of education is to understand the world around us, not to merely memorize facts. I tell my students all the time that I do not want them to memorize anything, but I want them to understand the concepts so that they can logically figure out the answers and apply their knowledge to the world around them. To achieve comprehension, I use engaging activities and discussion, hands-on learning opportunities, and visual supplements to help my students learn. I also believe it is important to learn and apply study skills to each subject in order for students to meet their full potential. I am passionate about engaging and motivating students and love working with students for whom learning does not always come easy.

I really love teaching and finding different ways of using analogies and similarities to explain difficult concepts. I have been very successful in teaching the sciences and mathematics courses in an understandable way. I believe that everyone is capable of learning the material, it simply needs to be presented in the correct way. Some students are more verbal learners, others are more visual learners. I use plenty of paper to demonstrate ideas and draw diagrams to help make the material more understandable.
As an MIT graduate, I was particularly driven to excel in science and mathematics courses so as to be able to apply these to engineering and technology problems. I subsequently obtained two doctorate degrees: one in medicine and the second in law. I am currently working on the development and patenting of medical devices to improve medical care for patients. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

During the last ten years, I have taught students in the areas of study skills, test preparation, US history, language arts and ESL/ELL students learning English. I have written curriculum and supervised special education teachers working with dyslexic students. I earned my first master's degree in education, and am part way through my post-master's degree in special education (learning specialist degree) at Simmons College in Boston. I never want to stop learning, nor sharing what I learn with my students.
I am always open to learning new styles, and often take part in researching new practices. Most of my teaching, however, is based on the direct teaching model. I like to start each class with an anticipatory set, challenging students to use their critical thinking skills. Then the skill set or information set is modeled by me, practiced with guidance by the students, and fin ... read more

I believe that in order to be a truly exceptional teacher, one must put an effort into getting to know their students as an individual. It is important to design lessons that will compliment a student's personal learning style and reflect their interests. I think that le ... read more
