Teaching is very subjective. Each individual learns according to his/her own style. What I find challenging and rewarding is to find that point where it “clicks”. I believe the best way to learn is through experience and discovery. As an example, I can describe the intelligence of an octopus. But until you actually see a video of one opening a jar for a treat, do you truly realize it as a thinking, planning being. I feel that teaching an individual how to use available resources is just as important as the actual subject. My teaching style could be labeled as Socratic in that I prefer to lead the student to discovering the answers to their own inquiries through a series of guided and redirected questions. Through my prior experience, I have observed that students tend to become overwhelmed by the subject material. By asking the student simple questions that require basic conceptual understanding, the student is able to build confidence and perspective as he draws nearer to a solution. Also, I prefer to emphasize the big picture, rather than the small details of a particular problem, so that the student may become an independent learner.
