A Little Bit About Me...

A love of learning has always been my trademark. As a child, I came home excited after school every day, eager to share what I'd learned. Yet, when I found myself hitting a wall in math a few times, I learned what it was to fear school. My goal as a tutor is to move a student past that challenge so he or she can view learning as a fun, exciting experience. With patience and encouragement, I believe everyone can feel this way.
Getting to know each of my students as an individual is the first step in my tutoring process. Seeing the world through his or her eyes helps me to connect the learning to the student's own paradigm or viewpoint. In my education courses, I learned the technical terms for what I've always known -- when a student can feel part of the process, he or she is well on the way to understanding. My students become part of the process, and as a rule, my students learn.

My teaching style is one that is easily relatable to the students. I teach bringing the real life to the classroom so it is applicable to other parts of their life, not just being able to comprehend the questions of a reading passage but successfully being able to apply what they have learned to life outside the classroom.
As I teacher for the last five years in Lake County I have taught English as a second Langugage,and students with exceptionalitites in grades sixth through eight. I have students that have learned to read while in my class as well as increase their knowledge of how to sound out a word and independently being able to spell. I instructed middle school and high school students for over 12 years before I became certified as a school psychologist in 1998. I have subsequently instructed at the college level since 1998 in the areas of psychology and teacher education. I am a tenured Full Professor. I also continue to complete psychological evaluations for our college's students through our Student Disabilities Service Office.
As a psychologist I understand what it takes to transfer information and get it to "stick" in our central nervous system (brain).
