A Little Bit About Me...

I am a highly-experienced speaker and tutor of German with 4.5 years of tutoring experience. As a teenager, I attended the annual Statewide German Competition in San Antonio, TX, competing in various fields such as sight-reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation. I scored in the 90th percentile on the National Exam for three consecutive years; in 2011, I received the highest score in the state of Texas. In 2010, I was able to travel to Schwaebisch Hall, Germany, for a six-month study abroad program, where I lived with a German family and attended school to achieve an immersive experience. My students show marked improvement in their abilities with German. I am projected to receive my BA in German in May 2016. I specialize in translation, conversation, and grammar.

When a question is asked, I am not going to simply just tell the student the answer. I would want them to think it out and try and figure it out for themselves. I would however guide them in the right direction and even ask them other questions they may know in order for them to figure out the intial problem. I feel that these types of interactions are a more effective way of learning. Also, writing things down helps tremedously because not only are you thinking it, but you're seeing it and reading it as well. I am a very easy person to get along with, and I am also very encouraging. I enjoy helping others whether it's in an academic environment or not.
Being in college for four years exposed me to social environments that I normally wouldn't have been able to encounter on a day to day basis. Whether I was learning on my own, working with or helping fellow classmates, or eve ... read more

I have always wanted to be a teacher, I couldn't really see myself doing anything else. I try to make learning and inclusive experience for all children. I feel that sometimes children's different learning styles get overlooked and then as a community we have a child that is left feeling that they are unworthy. My goal is to help all children learn at their pace and at their skill level, not at some standard set by the state. I want the children I spend time with to feel good about their learning experience and to enjoy themselves.

I love teaching and learning. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in English and Journalism from Northwestern, I went on to tutor students in Biblical Hebrew while earning my master's in theology. I enjoyed teaching so much that I decided to earn a master's degree in education. While working on that degree, I tutored students in English, reading and math at Educational Partners. I then spent a year working as a high school English teacher in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. While earning my most recent master's in English, I have taught English composition at WVU for the last three years. I have also taught creative writing.

I beleive that patience and kindness are a key factor of working with students. As students are attempting to master content that is difficult, the teacher should demonstrate encouragement and patience. I also believe students learn in different manners. Therefore, if a student is not comprehending the information in the traditional manner, then a different approach is necessary.
Recently, I obtained my Master's Degree in the Art of Teaching Language Arts 7-12. I have worked as a substitute, Ohio Achievement Test Tutor, and summer school teacher for the past five years. I find that students benefit greatly by becoming active participants in the teaching process. I try to develop a curriculum that students help determine, and create lessons that center around topics that interest the students and apply to their lives in a real and practical manner. I try to begin a dialogue with students whenever possible, but also try to know when students would benefit more from direct instruction from their teacher.

I have recently graduated cum laude from Kent State University Stark with a BA in English and dual minors in Writing and History. The courses that I completed required an extensive amount of research and writing, in which I excelled. As a tutor in the Writing Center I worked one-on-one with individual students on a variety of different subjects, organized Grammar Workshops, and visited classrooms to instruct students on the Writing Process.
