My style of teaching is adaptive for each individual student when possible. Each student has their own way of learning and it is my job to adjust to that. I try to meet the student where they are right now and devise a plan to fit what they want to do and accomplish the goals that they set. I treat each student with respect and expect the same in return. I am flexible and understanding, but I will push the student to achieve their potential. Being from the area and having worked in education my entire career, I have a good understanding of the needs of today's student. I currently work at a local University where I see firsthand the struggle underprepared students face. I am an experienced educator having taught every grade level from preK through college.

I always try to start from "where the student is" and build on from starting point. I believe in positive reinforcement and that anything worth having in life requires consistent effort. I frequently am told after a day of subbing, "Mr. Burns, you are the greatest sub ever!" My wife and I also still perform as musicians in local restaurants, including several Mexican restaurants where we perform many songs in Spanish. I taught Middle School band for 30 years in the public schools, followed by 9 years part-time at the respected Old Trail School in Bath, OH. My bands at Bolich Middle School in Cuyahoga Falls, OH received many "Outstanding" ratings at O.M.E.A. contests. I have also substituted in several local school districts for a wide variety of subjects, including Spanish and French. I have also tutored Spanish privately, and given private lessons on piano and flute.

I love working with students and helping them to learn and understand. I believe that any student can understand any subject and that all students are able to succeed. I am an innovative, flexible, and patient individual. I am excited to work with students helping them to succeed in all that they do. As for a specific teaching style, I beleive that teachers should adapt how they teach. This ability to change is what allows all students to learn no matter past experiences in a given subject. I have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and am currently pursuing a Master’s Degree from Liberty University so that I can teach. I feel my style of teaching is one of being a facilitator. I choose to interact with the student by asking questions so enabling them to reach the answer through their own thinking processes. The excitement of seeing their confidence build as they realize they can figure out problems independently is the reward of being an educator. I believe my job is to guide and support the student. My teaching experience started teaching in a pre-school with 4 year olds. I then taught 3rd grade for 1 year and kindergarten for 9 years. When I updated my certificate (just in the last year) I did some teaching in a mildly handicapped resource room.
