I've been tutoring since high schools in a wide range of subjects, such as latin, algebra II, and biology. The skills you use to teach yourself the material can be directly applied to someone else, especially when you find something does not click at first. I have a number of mnemonics for helping my tutees retain the material they've spent time learning. In college I don't tutor professionally because of time constraints, but I help other students understand problems they may be having difficulty with. I've also had my own SAT tutor and seen different programs and their styles, and I've chosen the one that I find the most effective.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a valedictorian candidate, graduating with a degree in English. My background in English is both technical, focusing on classics in British and early American literature, while my position as editor of the Sierra Nevada Review, an annual publication of poetry, affords me a creative grasp of writing. I am also the assistant coordinator of the Sierra Nevada Tutoring Center. During my time at the center, I have helped institute protocols for L2 learners and have instructed tutors on methods of tutoring. I have been a tutor for four years, and have tutored all ages, including elementary school children learning to read, as well as adults working on dissertations.
I emphasize meaning in my instructional style. Rather than, say, inculcate a formula for comma us, I try to convey how comma use provides meaningful structure to an idea, i.e. the sentence. In the larger sphere of t ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I begin a lesson by asking a student what he or she knows about the topic. If they have any familiarity with the topic I ask about it and confirm or correct their preconceptions. If the subject lends itself to a real-world example or demonstration, I would offer this for thought. Finally I teach the core concept, connecting it to other concepts already understood by the student. There is usually more than one way to teach a concept. I take into account the learning style of the student. Written or diagrammatic methods might be more effective than verbal explanations. Pnemonics can be useful, but only if the underlying concepts are first taught.
Upon matriculation at Colby, I enrolled in organic chemistry and decided to major in chemistry. I continued my studies in chemistry and additional areas of interest, including math, government, and economics. Before graduating I participa ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Born and raised in upstate New York, I graduated from Cornell University in the spring of 2000 with a B.S. in Biology. In 2003, after a short stay in the biotechnology world, I moved west to work for an outdoor science school in Southern California. Since then, I have had the pleasure of traveling all over the country and working with a variety of successful environmental education programs, summer camps, and adventure programs.
Having worked with students of all ages in a variety of settings, I specialize in teaching science and math concepts as well as test prep and study skills. My mission as a tutor is to help students understand subject content while learning how to learn. My favorite part of being a teacher is watching confusion and doubt become knowledge and confidence. I believe that this transition of ignorance to understanding is the hallmark of education and my go ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a former mathematics teacher who is interested in returning to the profession. I have both tutored and taught the subject in the past, and have test scores that demonstrate my current proficiency. Recently, I finished a "refresher" graduate-level course at UNR, and am independently reading an assortment of literature from NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and others.
Mathematics is a field that extends beyond a series of procedures as it taught far too widely these days. My stress is on conceptual understanding, as it is the key to understanding the subject. Even moreso than the procedures that we have been accustomed to viewing as being the core of Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus, conceputal underpinnings are what the make the subject meaningful.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an MBA student, I constantly had to conduct research in challenging fields, write reports, train others and make appropriate recommendations. I have particularly enjoyed carrying on tasks that required teaching others, presenting personal research and challenging specific teaching styles. As a substitute teacher, I have developed my teaching skills and became able to adapt to the different educational level, schools, communities etc. From my professional experience, I learned to be a team leader, to focus on the delegated task, to prioritize and to reward results.
I am a parent and I understand that educating our children is a priority. Although challenging, I particularly enjoy working with children, teaching them as well as learning from them. I believe that what makes me a good teacher is my ability to listen, understand a child's outlook on things and my constant focus ... read more

I am an extrovert, personable, intelligent, and am not limited to one specific style of teaching. A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated from University of Nevada, Reno summa cum laude. I was also my high school valedictorian. I have always excelled in school because I love learning and have great organization and study skills. Almost all of my work experience has been with students— from working as a preschool teacher to volunteering to tutor elementary school students at the Boys and Girls Club to advising high school students in the Upward Bound program to tutoring college students in the University Writing Center.
I have a friendly, encouraging approach with my students; I like them to feel comfortable working with me, but I also let them know that I have high expectations and that our tutoring sessions are not social time. My goal is to get students to understand the material and feel comfortable discussing and applying it, so my tutoring sessions are often very conversational. I provide ... read more

I have earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in mining engineering which have given me a deep understanding in many areas of math, science and engineering. During my undergraduate and graduate education, I worked both as a research assistant and as a teaching assistant. In my role as a research assistant I was a member, and later a leader, of an interdisciplinary team of researchers. I gained extensive grammatical skills through my experience preparing research papers, laboratory reports and technical presentations. In addition to my research duties, I acted as a teaching assistant for three years during my education. For this position, I received training in teaching and tutoring styles. I was responsible for providing out-of-class tutoring on engineering topics which heavily involved the application of math and science concepts. I was also occasionally responsible ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

A strength on which I have always prided myself is my ability to relate complex concepts with useful analogies and from different angles. I never underestimate a child's ability to learn something, so long as it's in a way in which they understand it. Curriculum development is also important. By that, I mean the creation of illustrations, tables, lists, acronyms, heuristics, and flash cards to aid a student in their thirst to learn. I am patient and fun, and working with children is something that has always animated and invigorated me. By getting a child to enjoy what he or she is learning, a tutor can open the floodgates to his or her potential and happiness.
My experience in tutoring computers for the last 6 years and facilitating study sessions in college for the last 4 years has refined my skills in directing absorption of knowledge in a direction that is organized and on ... read more
