I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I have noticed a couple things in my years tutoring people in math. I have noticed that many people have trouble with the fundamental concepts of fractions, decimals, order of operations, and adding/subtracting positive and negative numbers.
