My comments on tutoring World History : taught for 8 years; wrote for major publisher

I believe that each student learns in his or her unique way. Creativity in teaching style is necessary to find out how best to teach. I have developed many different strategies, approaches.
I have 25 years experience in teaching from grades 6 through college; public schools; private schools; community college. My masters degree is in history. I have written one government text, several chapters of high school history texts, and economics teacher materials while working for Glencoe/ McGraw-Hill publishing. I have an Ohio professional certificate, still up to date. I am retired, but still writing for a web site.

A Little Bit About Me...

I meet this qualification because I have had the opportunity of working with a diverse background of all type of students ranging from gang affiliation, developmentally delayed, emotional disturbed, attention deficit disorder, and incarcerated students. I have served in the position as an Autism Teacher, Paraeducator (Behavioral Management), Substitute teacher, Special Education and Regular Education. I also am currently a Chaplain Eagle with the Los Angeles County Probation Department. I have volunteered in this program since 2003 and worked with incarcerated juveniles from a spiritual perspective as well as academically. Within all of these positions I understood the background of what type of students I am working with and I would go meet with them outside of the classroom in their assigned probation camp dorms after school hours, so that I could get to know them as an individual ... read more

Education is my passion an on this road of life I am always striving to learn new things. Working with children gives me an opportunity to impart knowledge through their surroundings. My style of teaching is both hands on and hands off, I like to give the child an opportunity to try it on their own and make suggestions. I believe that their voice is also important.
My passion for education drives me to a place, where I desire to teach children the joy in reading. In the past I developed a program to teach reading and mathe through culinary arts. Through research I have been able to develop extensive grammatical skills. I believe that in order to bring about change, you have to become the change. Children are like a garden of flowers who need only to be natured and love. In that type of enviroment any child can learn.

I enjoy teaching very much. My style is based on discovery method. I use a series of questions and hints to help the student probe the mind to find the answer that the student may already know. Learning needs to be fun and exciting and I try to make learning fun. I want the student to be excited and have a sense of accomplishment that the student has learned a lesson well when the lesson is finished. This sense of accomplishment is what will lead to further academic successes in the future and help the student be successful in later life.

I love tutoring and mentoring kids, period. It's spiriturally rewarding to me as an adult to have a part in a child's development. I believe every child is special. There's is no doubt in my mind that if a tutor approach is based on patience, quality time and empathy, he or she will be successful and effective. The latter mentioned characteristics has always been viewed by me as the hallmarks of tutoring. I have worked for years with the brightest and those who just need the right approach to learning to become the brightest. Tutoring children is a job you have to love doing because it requires passion and understanding. I understand the amazing change that can immediately take place in a child's life when their instructor (tutor) expresses passion and concern in their development and future.

I enjoy teaching very much. I think a strength trying to use a student's active content or prior knowledge to connect to material. My attempts are always to make the student feel empowered by the education process. If you can connect to way what they are into, either cartoons, hip-hop, popular culture, with conservative humor, then sometimes you can gain their understanding much quicker. In math I try to use a very simple, step by step process and continue until they "Get it!"
I earned my undergraduate degree of History at The College of Charleston. From there I have been teaching various subjects such as math, Algebra, Geometry, World Geography, U. S. The importance of education has always been clear to me. I was born into a middle class family without a lot of resources. It became obvious to me that if I desired to pursue higher education I would have to qualify for scholarships and grants. I earned a bachelor degree in Mass Communication with an emphasis in Radio and Television. I was able to do voice over work at area radio stations. I wanted to earn a graduate degree so I applied to and was accepted into a gradaute program. I chose to study Education and Theology. I completed my degree in 1996. I have taught on both the high school and collegeiate level.
I love to be in the classroom. I love the process of learning. It is important to understand that children learn at different paces and in different ways. It is important for us as instructors to recognize this dynamic. I particularly believe that we have a resp ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Since I acquired language using primarily the conversational method, that is my basic approach to teaching. Of course there are the basics of grammar and syntax, style and such, all of which are necessary, but if you cannot open your mouth and produce an intelligible phrase, then what good is it to acquire another language? I approach this method through dialogue with my pupil - the Aristotelian method, if you will. I ask the questions, they provide the responses and I correct them on the points of grammar that are applicable to the extent situation. This, I believe, frames the lesson in a practical application, as opposed to mere rote memorization. It's the method that worked for me, so I believe in it and I use it.

I graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Sociology. Almost immediately I went to work in the behavioral health field. While there, I found an ability to connect with, and build a rapport with the residents at the facility. After a year, I took a position as a Clinical Counselor at the Medical University of South Carolina, working with emotionally disabled adolescents and putting together "groups" or behavioral classes in the hospital. I have taken and passed PRAXIS examinations in the field of Special Education, and am now a highly qualified Special Education teacher. I have taught Special Education in three Counties, and absolutely love teaching.
My teaching methods are rather basic. I respect the student, and I encourage the student. I have found that reward goes much farther than ridicule or punishment when motivating a student to believe in themselves, and th ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with both children and adults. I think that everyone has the ability to learn ,but teaching styles need to be geared toward the individual. Some seem to learn more through doing while others from lecture. Everyone has the potential to learn just at different paces. I believe that everyone has potential and it is our job as tutors and teachers to help bring it out. There are no stupid children just lazy teachers in my opinion. Given the opportunity I believe that I can help to bring out the potential in those who are in need.
I have tutored college students while obtaining my BA and my MA in Sociology. I was given the opportunity to tutor when a number of professors asked for my help.
