Since Mich of humanity's understanding is based on metaphor, description and its subtleties is a key part of any writing process, be it creative or instructional.My favorite form of writing is creative, however I also enjoy writing essays and other pieces based on fact. I worked for 11 years in Virginia as a paraprofessional in the school system, originally doing strictly homebase work with handicapped children, then moving into the schools. I worked with middle school children faced with a wide range of disabilities and disorders, including ADHD, Downs, emotional issues and hearing impairments. I have worked with many of my classmates through my college years, helping them to prepare research papers and presentations at the same time as I was working on mine. I earned both of my degrees while working and caring for very young children. I feel this was possible because of my time management skills and determination to see a task through to completion. Young children learn best through things that have meaning to them. For example, I once tutored a child that had difficulty learning his multiplication tables, but was an avid NASCAR fan. I taught him the sums of multiplication problems by using the numbers on the drivers cars. He learned that the sum of 6x4, and 4x6 was equal to Jeff Gordon's number, which was 24. We did that with every car in NASCAR and people were amazed at how quickly he learned his multiplication tables. Multiplication tables became a breeze to him. As a mother of two young children, I want to see all children exceed. Children learn through positive reinforcement and by slowly building confidence, as his or her work improves. Childen should not be made to feel inferior, but need approriate teachings to fit his or her personalities.
