As a parent concerned about the condition of the public school system we decided to homeschool our last two children. I began teaching them in the first grade and have continued up to, and including, the present time. My son is now a high school freshman and my daughter is in the eighth grade. During this time I helped start a homeschool cooperative. We wanted to continue homeschooling our children, but we also wanted to provide them with more choices taught by someone experienced, or having an expertise in an area. To be honest I worked as a Substitute because I was Laid off from my job. But when I started teaching I found it was very difficult to keep control of the class and to get the students to do their work. I thought I couldn't do this anymore. I didn't quit and things did get better. I learned that most of these children were from single parent homes, and were living below the poverty level. They were scared, hungrey and tired at times, and I new I had to adjust for me to be of any help, and I did.
