The first student I taught was in October 2012 while I was still employed by the University of Pittsburgh, School of Nursing- Center for Research & Evaluation, developing web and desktop applications to collect, manage, and transform research data, and working on obtaining my Master's degree. However, I have been tutoring full-time for 3 years. I have taught thousands of students, both in person and online. My previous students have praised me for being an excellent programmer, patient, reliable, and supportive. My teaching style depends on the student and if we are working in person or online.

As both a math student and tutor, I believe the most effective approach to learning is for the tutor to act as a guide, allowing the students to make the important connections. I am very patient and have good communication skills. I am a senior at Reed College studying mathematics. While at Reed I have worked as both a grader and a tutor. Having graded assignments, I can quickly grasp multiple ways to approach a problem and give commentary where necessary. I also have experience working at an alternative school as a math tutor, with students who have trouble succeeding in traditional learning environments. I received a BS in Computer Science, software engineering, and a minor in Mathematics. I worked for one year at the TLC, or Teaching Learning Center, where upper classmen would tutor other students taking courses they had already taken and done quite well in. I tutored mostly computer courses (programming, excel, etc), but there were also days when I was asked to tutor Calculus. I like to start by encouraging the student to demonstrate what they know, and then give them a little nudge of guidance when they come to something that confuses them. If they're really stumped, then I try to teach them first from a conventional standpoint, then switch to a more example-based explanation.
